Keep Away from Icy Lakes, Canals and Rivers |
||
Dear all residents,
As freezing temperatures continue across the West Midlands, please keep away from icy lakes, ponds, canals, rivers, and reservoirs.
Although frozen water can appear solid and safe, ice is extremely unpredictable. Its thickness can vary across the same body of water and can weaken suddenly without a warning. What may look safe from the surface can break instantly.
Key safety advice:
❄️ Never walk, play, or skate on frozen lakes, ponds, canals, or rivers.
❄️Keep children and pets well away from the water's edge.
❄️Avoid throwing objects into ice to "test" it.
❄️Do not attempt a rescue by entering the water or stepping into ice. Call 999 immediately and ask for fire service.
Frozen water may look harmless, but it is one of the most dangerous winter hazards we face. A moment's caution is valuable.
Please help us keep our communities safe this winter.
Look after each other, stay back, stay alert, and stay safe.
