Weekly Update from your local Bablake NPT
Dear Members
Here’s your weekly update from myself and the rest of the team.
What’s Been Happening
Awareness A concerned walker alerted Police to what appeared to be footprints and a break in the ice on a frozen pond in COUNDON HALL PARK. Emergency services responded and specialist equipment brought to the location to check under the surface of water. A drone was also used to assess from above. Thankfully no persons had entered the ice but incidents like this are a stark reminder of the dangers of frozen water.
Frozen lakes, ponds and canals may look solid, but the thickness of ice can never be gauged and changes occur significantly across bodies of water due to environmental and physical factors. Ice is truly unpredictable and can and give way without warning. Falling into freezing water causes cold‑water shock! Within seconds it makes it almost impossible to breathe, swim, or climb out. Sudden immersion in water at 15°C and below can trigger involuntary gasping, hyperventilation, and panic making drowning extremely likely even for the strongest of swimmers.
Many Incidents of this nature reported to emergency services involve children or pets. Even throwing stones as a bit of fun and a challenge to break the ice can lead to a dire situation should one lose one's balance! Please parents, speak to your children about the dangers of frozen water. It's not all about inquisitive children, dogs often run onto ice too, and owners get into trouble trying to rescue them. Pet parents be aware of the dangers also!
Good Deed Gone Bad There have been several vehicle seizures for varying reasons including ‘stolens’. On Sunday, what might have been intended as a good deed lending a car to a friend, ended up in a string of offences. Officer’s advice…’If you borrow a friend's car please check that the car has an MOT, VEL and your insurance allows you to drive it. Comprehensive insurance does not automatically give you the right to drive other cars. Ignorance is no excuse’. As well as the car being seized the driver was also reported.
Do You Have a Ghost? Whilst on the subject of vehicles, West Midlands Police have been running operations against "stealth" or "ghost" number plates which are illegal reflective or altered number plates designed to evade ANPR cameras. These are favoured by those driving dangerously and criminals to avoid speeding fines, insurance checks, and police tracking. Following campaigning, the Government has introduced new national powers to crackdown on ghost plates as part of its Road Safety Strategy. Police Forces nationwide will receive enhanced powers and technology to detect and prosecute offenders with more severe consequences.
Hoax Calls A group of children thought it would be fun to make a false 999 call from a public telephone box. The children were quickly found nearby and taken home to their parents. Even though it was suspected to be a ‘prank’ call, resources were still dispatched to be sure. This takes us away from real emergencies. parents (appreciated another request, but an important discussion), please advise children that hoax calls can really put lives at risk. To help with ‘that’ talk, telephone boxes may seem to be anonymous, but they are not. All 999 calls are recorded and traceable, even from TK’s, mobile phones and withheld numbers. Making a hoax emergency call is a criminal offence.
Crime Figures Over the past nine days, three stolen vehicles have been reported across Bablake which have been from BENNETTS ROAD NORTH, THE WINDMILL HILL and TAMWORTH ROAD. Vehicles stolen include a Jaguar F Pace, Fiat Ducato and a Ford Transit.
