How to beat the bogus caller |
Hello Resident
Beating a bogus caller involves a mix of physical security at your door and knowing exactly what a genuine West Midlands Police (WMP) officer will never do. 1. Use the "Doorstep Rule" Stop and Think: If you aren't expecting a visitor, you are under no obligation to open the door. Check the Spyhole: Use your door viewer or a window to see who is there before answering. Chain On: Always keep the door chain on when you open it. Never remove it until you are 100% certain of the caller's identity. Verify ID: Ask for a Police Warrant Card. A genuine officer will expect this and will wait while you check it carefully. 2. The "Hang Up and Wait" Verification If someone calls you or comes to your door claiming to be an officer and you are unsure: Terminate the contact: Hang up the phone or close the door. Wait 5 minutes: Scammers can keep phone lines open. Wait for a clear dial tone or use a different phone entirely. Call 101: Dial the non-emergency police number and ask for the officer’s name and collar number to verify they are legitimate. 3. Know the Red Flags West Midlands Police will NEVER do the following: Ask for your bank PIN, passwords, or login details. Ask you to transfer money to a "safe account." Ask for cash or bank cards to be handed over to a courier. Demand a fine or fee to be paid over the phone or online. Pressure or threaten you for "not complying" with an investigation. 4. Digital Security Block & Report: Use your phone's settings to block suspicious numbers. Action Fraud: Report any impersonation attempts to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040. 7726: Forward suspicious text messages to 7726 so mobile providers can investigate the number. Thank You
