Wolverhampton Police Warning Over ATM Distraction Thefts |
||
|
Good morning Resident
Residents across Wolverhampton are being urged to stay vigilant when using cash machines following continued reports of distraction thefts targeting ATM users.
Distraction thefts occur when criminals deliberately divert a person’s attention while they are withdrawing cash or entering their PIN number. Offenders often work in pairs or groups and can steal bank cards, cash, or personal belongings within seconds.
West Midlands Police officers have highlighted that criminals commonly target busy shopping areas, high streets, and standalone cash machines where people may be distracted or rushing.
Police say offenders use a range of tactics, including: Pretending to offer help at the ATM Claiming the machine is faulty Dropping money or items on the floor to distract victims Standing too close to observe PIN numbers Creating confusion while an accomplice steals the victim’s card or cash In some reported incidents across the UK, thieves have distracted victims long enough to remove their bank card from the machine before making withdrawals elsewhere.
West Midlands Police are advising residents to take simple precautions to stay safe when using ATMs: Always shield your PIN with your hand or body Be aware of anyone standing unusually close Avoid engaging with strangers while using the machine Put cash and cards away immediately Use cash machines located inside banks or busy shopping centres where possible If you feel uncomfortable or distracted, cancel the transaction and walk away Police also recommend checking ATMs for signs of tampering before use, such as loose card readers or unusual attachments.
A recent neighbourhood alert issued in Wolverhampton warned residents to remain alert around ATMs and to report suspicious behaviour immediately. Officers stressed that criminals often rely on only a few seconds of distraction to commit theft.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted should contact their bank immediately to freeze or cancel their card and report the incident to police via 101. In an emergency, always dial 999.
