Preventing stolen doorstep deliveries |
West Midlands Police advises core actions to combat the growing trend of opportunist thieves stealing unattended packages from porches and doorsteps.
To secure your home against doorstep delivery theft, follow these official recommendations:
· Track Your Delivery Live: Monitor your tracking links actively to ensure you or an alternate resident are physically present at the property exactly when the courier arrives. · Install a Video Doorbell: Link a smart doorbell camera directly to your smartphone to receive immediate movement alerts and visually monitor delivery drop-offs in real time. · Nominate a Trusted Neighbour: Divert incoming deliveries to a specific neighbour or a local family member who is guaranteed to be home, or utilise a concierge service if you reside in a flat. · Use Off-Site Locker Services: Route high-value or frequent online orders to secure, off-site transit lockers at heavily trafficked locations like local supermarkets to prevent exposure. · Fit Motion-Activated Security Lights: Position bright security lighting over your front door and entryway to strip away the shadow cover that doorstep thieves rely on. · Enforce Social Media Silence: Never post photos, dates, or countdowns regarding highly anticipated or high-value online orders on public feeds, as this alerts local thieves to your delivery windows. · Report Active Incidents: If a parcel has been stolen, call 101 or file a report via the West Midlands Police Online Portal. If you catch a thief actively stealing a package in real time, immediately dial 999.
