Bike awareness, Lock it or lose it! |

Pedal cycle theft can happen anywhere, from busy town centres and transport hubs to residential areas, workplaces and communal bike storage facilities. West Midlands Police are reminding cyclists to take simple steps to protect their bikes and reduce the chances of becoming a victim of theft. With pedal cycles often valuable and relatively easy for offenders to remove, leaving a bike unsecured, even for a short time, can provide an opportunity for thieves. Make your bike harder to steal Using a good-quality lock is one of the most effective ways to protect your cycle. Where possible, secure the frame and wheels to a solid, fixed object and consider using two different types of lock for additional protection. Avoid leaving your bike in isolated or poorly lit locations. When using cycle parking, choose busy areas where there is good visibility and, where available, CCTV coverage. At home, keep your bike somewhere secure and out of sight. A locked shed, garage or dedicated cycle storage area can provide an extra layer of protection. Record your bike details Make a note of your cycle’s make, model, colour and frame number. Taking clear photographs of the bike and any distinctive features can also help police identify it if it is stolen and later recovered. Consider registering your bike on a recognised cycle registration database. This can help establish ownership and may improve the chances of it being returned if it is recovered. Think twice before buying a bargain Cyclists are also encouraged to be cautious when purchasing second-hand bikes. A price that seems too good to be true may indicate that a cycle has been stolen. Check the bike’s details and ownership information before buying, particularly when purchasing through online marketplaces. Keep records of the seller, listing and any correspondence or receipts. If your bike is stolen Report the theft to West Midlands Police as soon as possible and provide as much information as you can, including photographs, the frame number and details of where and when the bike was stolen. By taking a few minutes to secure and record your bike, cyclists can make it more difficult for thieves and give themselves a better chance of recovering it if the worst happens. Secure it. Record it. Protect it. A few simple precautions could make all the difference between your bike being ready for your next journey and being taken by a thief.
